Hoard's Dairyman
Magazine currently employs CTP (Computer To Plate) Technology.
Because we are utilizing this technology, all new advertising
materials must be received in digital form in order to
comply with our workflow. Materials received as film will
have to be converted into an electronic file at an additional
cost to the advertiser. The following formats and programs
are available to advertisers wishing to submit information
to us in an electronic manner. Please note that the Dairyman
is constructed on Apple Power Macintosh computers using the OS X operating system the PC formats noted are the only
ones supported.
- Media: CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R and DVD-RW that are formatted for both Mac & PC. Iomega Zip 250s and 750s are also acceptable.
- Software programs (Mac
& PC): QuarkXPress version 6.5; Adobe
Illustrator versions 6.0 to CS2; Adobe PhotoShop
versions 3.0 to CS2; Adobe InDesign 1.52-CS2; Adobe Acrobat 7 Pro.
(Do not send advertisements
created in PageMaker, Microsoft Publisher, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft
Excel, Word Perfect or any other non-standard programs as they are unusable within our
workflow.)
- Fonts: Due to the
requirements of digitally processing the magazine, only Postscript fonts can be used. Bitmap fonts
are not supported in most programs and TrueType fonts
(PC) cannot be used at all unless they are embedded
in a PDF file. Fonts not received as Postscript fonts
will be matched and substituted for same at publisher's
discretion. Contact Hoard's art director if you have
a question concerning font usage.
- PDF Files: When generating
PDF files of your advertisement, please double check
that your image files are of a high enough resolution
(150-300 dpi) and that they are saved as either CMYK,
GREYSCALE or have the correct PANTONE spot color (RGB
files will not work), and that ALL
OF YOUR FONTS ARE EMBEDDED. Failure to embed
all fonts causes text to reflow and makes it impossible
for us to use the file, especially if it was built
using PC TrueType fonts. Please contact our Art Director
if you have any questions concerning PDF files.
- Images: All image
files must be submitted as either Jpeg (.jpg), Tiff
(.tif) or EPS (.eps) files. All images must be converted
to or saved as CMYK and have a resolution of no lower
than 300 dpi. Web graphics
cannot be used in print media. MacroMedia Freehand files must be submitted as
EPS files accompanied with the supporting Postscript
fonts (you may convert all text into shapes to omit
font-dependancy). All EPS images must be placed into
a self-extracting archive file such as a StuffIt file
or a Zip file. Transmission via the internet sometimes
corrupts the image data in the EPS file.
- Submission: All digital
media must be compressed into either a Mac-compatible
self-extracting archive file such as an .sit.
or within a .zip file only. Submissions via e-mail should not exceed 5-megabytes
per transmission. Files exceeding this
should be saved to a disc or burned onto a CD-R or DVD-R and
sent via snail-mail or correctly converted into a
PDF file and sent via e-mail. Files exceeding 5 megabytes
may also be sent to our web server via an FTP (file
transfer protocol) program.
- FTP Submissions: FTP
address - www.hoards.com; Username - advert; Password
- hoardsads. Ads submitted via email should be sent
to hdads@hoards.com. Fax ad proof to: Gayle Grandt (920) 563-7298.
Ads submitted without color match proof will be run
to pleasing color.
- Directory: A screen-shot or
printed directory must be included with the disk or
other media. The disk must be labeled with the software
programs and version as well as the name of the submitting
party and the ad the disk contains.
