23 State May milk production up 1.2 percent
Monthly Milk Production
Released June 21: May 2016 milk production in the 23 states for which USDA reports monthly was 17.5 billion pounds, up 1.2 percent from May 2015. April revised production at 16.8 billion pounds, was up 1.1 percent from April 2015. The April revision represented a decrease of 13 million pounds or 0.1 percent from last month's preliminary production estimate.

Arizona up 2.3 percent; California down 2.8 percent
Colorado up 4.1 percent; Florida down 2.9 percent
Idaho up 1.8 percent; Illinois down 0.6 percent
Indiana up 2.0 percent; Iowa up 2.3 percent
Kansas up 0.4 percent; Michigan up 6.9 percent
Minnesota up 2.2 percent; New Mexico down 3.8 percent
New York up 4.9 percent; Ohio up 0.4 percent
Oregon up 2.2 percent; Pennsylvania up 0.3 percent
South Dakota up 9.5 percent; Texas up 1.4 percent
Utah down 4.6 percent; Vermont up 1.3 percent
Virginia down 3.8 percent; Washington no change
Wisconsin up 4.2 percent
Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 2,019 pounds for May, 21 pounds above May 2015.
The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.64 million head. This is 11,000 head more than May 2015 but unchanged from April 2016.
Note: The annual production of milk for the U.S. during 2015 was 209 billion pounds, 1.3 percent above 2014. Revisions to 2014 production increased the annual total 8 million pounds. Revised 2015 production was up 139 million pounds from last month's publication.
Production per cow averaged 22,393 pounds for 2015, 134 pounds above 2014.
The average number of milk cows in the U.S. during 2015 was 9.32 million head, up 0.6 percent from 2014. The average number of milk cows was revised up 2,000 head for 2015.
Milk production data for 23 states from USDA is released around the 18th of the month following the month for which the information applies. At the same time the current production figures are released, updated data for the previous month's milk production is released. This graph reflects the updated information.
The 23 states for which the USDA reports milk production are: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
