Dr. Robert Glock honored for service to colleagues and industry

Living out his belief that service involves giving more than receiving led Robert Glock, D.V.M., Ph.D., to receive the Academy of Veterinary Consultants (AVC) Outstanding Service Award. The award was presented at the AVC spring meeting in April in Oklahoma City and was sponsored by Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health. The AVC Outstanding Service Award recognizes a member who has made outstanding contributions to AVC and the beef-cattle and veterinary medicine industries. Dr. Glock received a commemorative plaque, and Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health donated $2,000 to the AVC Foundation in his honor. One of Dr. Glock's former students, John Mayer, D.V.M., technical services manager for Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health, nominated Glock, recognizing his abilities as a teacher, mentor, researcher, diagnostician and friend to the AVC membership. "Never has there been a challenge he would not tackle. He is always eager to help and to teach. Many students, young and old, have learned from him. He has been a friend and an ally to many people in all of animal agriculture – beef, dairy and swine. Dr. Glock has been a major resource to the entire AVC membership and the veterinary profession." Another former student, Kent Schwartz, D.V.M., M.S., a diagnostician at the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, says Glock has extraordinary abilities, lives life to the fullest and has made a significant impact on people and the veterinarian community. "Bob's recollection of scientific facts is amazing, but his ability to form relationships with a wide range of people – and remember those people – speaks volumes to his commitment to people and our profession. He has the ability to identify strengths and bring out the best in everyone. His curious mind always looks for opportunities to learn, to speculate and thoroughly investigate," Dr. Schwartz says. For the past 30 years, Glock has worked with a variety of people and animals in Iowa, Colorado and Arizona. He has been a diagnostic pathologist at the University of Arizona Department of Veterinary Medicine and Microbiology since 1998. A Nebraska native, he received his veterinary and doctorate degrees from Iowa State University. During his years in the industry, Glock says he has been fortunate to work with many students, young professionals and colleagues. Dr. Glock has been an AVC member for more than 25 years. "I doubt there is a group of people in an organization anywhere that equals the AVC," says Glock. "The members have an intense focus on the practical, while seeking the detailed information that will help them excel. They are great competitors but share openly with their colleagues. I have great respect for the group, and so this award is a tremendous honor." Glock also has served the industry through the U.S. Animal Health Association, the American Association of Swine Veterinaries (AASV) and the Arizona Cattlemen's Association. Glock is a past president of the AASV and was honored with the Howard Dunne Memorial Award for Outstanding Service to the AASV and the swine industry. "We're proud to recognize Dr. Glock for his service," says Rick Sibbel, D.V.M., director of Beef Technical Services for Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health. "This award is only a small representation of the value that Dr. Glock has brought to our industry, and we look forward to watching the example he has set to inspire others in our profession." Glock is the sixth recipient of the Outstanding Service Award. Previous winners include Dee Griffin, D.V.M., Clay Center, Neb.; Larry Hollis, D.V.M., Manhattan, Kan.; Louis Perino, D.V.M., M.D., Ph.
