Amanda Smith joined the Hoard's Dairyman editorial staff as Associate Editor in June of 2011. Smith covers feeding, milk quality, youth activities and heads up the World Dairy Expo Supplement.

Amanda graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. where she majored in Animal Science with a minor in Communications. She was a teaching assistant for the college's farm business management class. At Cornell, Smith served as secretary of the Sigma Alpha Sorority and CUDS, the Cornell Dairy Club. In addition, she was a CALS Ambassador (College of Agriculture and Life Sciences). Smith also wrote articles for the University on improved dairy farm practices based on Cornell research.

Smith hails from a 60-cow, 300-acre dairy farm in Medina, N.Y. One of Amanda's passions is registered Jerseys, and she currently owns 20 of them housed on her family's farm. Amanda's parents Richard and Patricia along with sister Michelle operate and reside on the farm.

This Ivy League student has an outstanding amount of vast, real-world farming experience - including multiple international experiences. For many years, Amanda has worked alongside her family on their own farm. In addition to this, she worked for CY Heifer Farm in Elba, N.Y., two years ago and helped manage young calves on the 3,000 head heifer operation. She also learned how to manage calves fed on automatic calf feeders, gained skills in calf care and illness prevention, and collaborate with Spanish-speaking employees. In 2008, Amanda was the heifer care intern at the 1,700-cow McCollum Dairy Farm in Gasport, N.Y., where she focused on heifers and transition cow management. At that farm, she administered vaccinations and managed prebreeding heifers. In the spring of 2009, Amanda flew over the Pacific Ocean to spend a semester studying at Lincoln University in Lincoln, New Zealand. Smith has also joined school groups for educational trips abroad to both Italy and Germany most recently. There she visited a variety of dairy farms.

In 2010, Amanda served as the 22nd Hoard's Dairyman editorial department intern. During that time, she authored over 20 articles for the magazine. She also spent three weeks traveling throughout the U.S. interviewing dairy producers and attending dairy meetings.
