-- Released February 19th, January 2010 milk production in the 23 states for which USDA reports monthly was 14.8 billion pounds, 0.6 percent below January 2009. December revised production at 14.6 billion pounds, down 0.7 from December 2008 - this revision represented an increase of 18 million pounds or 0.1 percent from last month's preliminary production estimate.

States that showed an increase when comparing this January's milk production with a year ago: Idaho up 1.5 percent; Iowa up 1.9 percent; Michigan up 2.4 percent; Minnesota up 3.6 percent; Ohio up 1.4 percent; Oregon up 1.1; Utah up 0.7 percent; Washington up 5.0 percent; and Wisconsin up 4.7 percent. Indiana no change from a year ago.

States that declined: Arizona -7.5 percent; California -2.4 percent; Colorado -10.4 percent; Florida -8.7 percent; Illinois -0.6 percent; Kansas -8.0 percent; Missouri -9.5; New Mexico -4.8 percent; New York -1.3; Pennsylvania -1.7 percent; Texas -3.3 percent; Vermont -1.4 percent; and Virginia -2.7 percent from a year ago.

The number of cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.32 million head. This is 191,000 head less than January 2009 and 4,000 head more than last month. Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,782 pounds for January, 30 pounds above last year.

Note: The annual production of milk for the U.S. during 2009 was 189 billion pounds, 0.3 percent below 2008. The average number of milk cows in the U.S. last year was 9.2 million head, down 1.2 percent from 2008. Production per cow averaged 20,576 pounds for 2009. That's up 181 pounds from 2008.

Milk production data for 23 states from USDA is released around the 18th of the month following the month for which the information applies. At the same time the current production figures are released, updated data for the previous month's milk production is released. This graph reflects the updated information.

The 23 states for which the USDA reports milk production are: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
