My placing for this class of Holstein cows is C D A B.C places over D for her bloom of udder. C is higher and fuller in her rear udder attachment, wider from the top to the base of her rear quarters, and is smoother in her fore udder attachment than D. C is more balanced in her rear quarters and displays more Holstein breed character about the head and is deeper in the jaw. C displays more overall style and balance, is straighter in the hock, and stands on a stronger pair of pasterns than D. I do grant that D is a longer-bodied individual.
In my middle comparison, D places over A for her size and scale. D is longer-bodied with greater length to her barrel and is longer from hips to pins. D is stronger and more powerful in the front end, being deeper in the heart and deeper in both the fore and rear rib and flank than A. D also is less quartered than A. D blends more smoothly neck to shoulders and is more open in her ribbing. I do concede that A is longer and cleaner in her neck and holds her udder higher above the hock.
Finally, A places over B because of her dairyness. She is longer and leaner in the neck and carries less flesh over the shoulders, topline, and rump. A has more size and scale than B, being a taller, more upstanding individual. She is wider in her hips, thurls, and pins. A has more spring and sweep to the rib. I do grant that B is a smoother blending individual, especially through the front end. However, B lacks the size, scale, and overall dairyness to merit a higher placing.
