Are you an eager, ambitious
dairy student interested in writing? If so, we would like you
to apply for the Hoard's Dairyman Summer Internship.
For the past 21 years, the Hoard's Dairyman internship program
has provided agricultural journalism and dairy science majors
with an opportunity to write for The National Dairy Farm Magazine.
Interested students need not major in journalism, but show a strong
interest in writing. Why? The majority of their summer experience
will be based around working with the Hoard's Dairyman editors
and the editorial content of the magazine.
What would your summer involve? Here are just a few highlights:
• The World Dairy Expo Supplement
– looking for responsibility? Our intern works with the
editorial team to gather articles, plan layout, edit copy, and
approve graphic design for a 52-page tabloid magazine; 52 tabloid
pages equals 88 pages of a standard-sized, 8-1/2 x 11 magazine.
• The Farm Flash Page – an opportunity to do technical
writing. The Farm Flash page gives our intern a chance to be
a regular contributor in each issue. When writing the page,
he or she will get a chance to review Journal of Dairy Science
articles, as well as university press releases.
• Hoard's Dairyman Online – a chance to work with
online communication. During the summer experience, our intern
gets a chance to learn the in's and out's of the World Wide
Web. The site is updated daily, and our intern will be able
to create and update aricltes and graphics for our web site,
as well as brainstorming new pages.
• Articles, travel, and more – a wide array of opportunities.
During the Hoard's Dairyman experience, interns will get to
spend two to three weeks traveling to dairy farms across the
U.S. Their goal will be writing farm stories, gathering Round
Table leads, along with visiting with and documenting the story
of National Dairy Shrines' Student Recognition Winner.
If
you are interested in our internship, apply before October 17 for the following summer. Students can mail resumes, grade transcripts,
cover letter, and three written letters of recommendation from
references to Corey Geiger, Internship Coordinator, 28 Milwaukee
Ave. West, Fort Atkinson, WI 53538. Remember, we're in the publishing
business, so meet the application deadline!
Hoard's Dairyman Farm offers summer internship
Are you an eager, ambitious dairy student interested in pursuing a career as a dairy producer, herdsperson, or farm manager? If so, we would like you to apply for the Hoard's Dairyman Farm Summer Internship. This internship opportunity will allow students to gain practical experience in a modern dairy facility and with a long-established purebred Guernsey herd.
For the past 109 years, Hoard's Dairyman has operated a dairy farm. That farm has played an invaluable role in helping the magazine serve its readers. In 2007, the Hoard's Dairyman Farm underwent an expansion to a 232-cow facility with a new double-10 herringbone parlor. Cows wear neck chain transponders that allow use of electronic. Electronic ID also allows tracking of milk flow rates, machine on-time monitoring, and real-time cow activity. Cows are housed in a two-row, sand-bedded free stall barn with 16-foot sidewalls. More information about the dairy can be viewed at www.hoards.com/farm/index.html
What would your summer involve? Here are just a few highlights:
• Milking Center operation: The opportunity to milk in a new double-10 herringbone parlor complete with electronic ID, daily weights, milk flow rates, and activity monitoring.
• Herd Health Work: The chance to work with the farm manager and herdsperson on day-to-day cow care activities, including fresh cow needs, vet check days, hoof trimming, A.I. work, calf care, embryo transfer, and other activities based on the intern’Äôs qualifications. Experience with Dairy Comp 305 and RFID readers also will be part of the summer experience.
• Visitor tours: The Hoard's Dairyman Farm frequently has visitors, and the intern will assist with preparation for these visits and may help with tours.
• Other activities: The internship responsibilities will be tailored to the specific skills of the applicant. If the applicant has an interest in specific jobs, those wishes can be discussed with the farm manager.
If you are interested in our internship, please apply before December 1 for the following summer. The internship start-and-stop dates would be flexible based on the applicant's availability.
Students can mail resumes, grade transcripts, and cover letter, along with two written letters of recommendation from references, to Corey Geiger, Internship Coordinator, 28 Milwaukee Avenue West, Fort Atkinson, WI 53538. Questions may be directed to Corey at (920) 563-5551 or cgeiger@hoards.com
