Spend your summer with Hoard’s Dairyman! Are you an eager, ambitious dairy students interested in writing? If so, we’d like to hear from you! For the past 30 years, the Hoard’s Dairyman internship program has provided agricultural journalism and dairy science students with an opportunity to write for a national dairy publication. Interested students do not need to be journalism majors but should show a strong interest in writing. A majority of the summer experience will be spent working directly with the Hoard’s Dairyman editors and writing content for the magazine.
What would your summer involve? Here are just a few highlights: • The Farm Flash page — an opportunity to do technical writing. The Farm Flash page gives our intern a chance to be a regular contributor in each issue. When writing Farm Flashes, he or she will review Journal of Dairy Science articles and university press releases.
• Hoard’s Dairyman Online — a chance to work with online our communication efforts, including blogging for our HD Notebook. Also, the editorial intern may have the opportunity to write for our e-newsletter, Hoard’s Dairyman Intel.
• The World Dairy Expo Supplement — looking for responsibility? Our intern works with the editorial team to gather articles, plan layout, and edit copy for a 70-page tabloid magazine.
• Articles, travel, and more — a wide array of opportunities. During the Hoard’s Dairyman experience, interns typically spend two to three weeks traveling to meetings and dairy farms across the U.S. Their goal will be writing farm stories and gathering Round Table leads, along with visiting with and documenting the story of the National Dairy Shrine’s Student Recognition winner.
The internship will be based out of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. Interested students should mail a current résumé (including college address), transcript, and cover letter, along with three written letters of recommendation, to Abby Bauer, Associate Editor, 28 Milwaukee Ave. West, Fort Atkinson, WI 53538. All application materials are due by Wednesday, October 17, 2018.
