David Kammel, University of Wisconsin-Madison professor and UW-Extension agricultural engineer, received the 2014 Pound Extension Award from the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.Kammel was recognized for his work focusing on Dairy Modernization that has helped countless Wisconsin dairyman modernize their facilities to stay in production, bring a new generation in to the family business, improve their profitability and quality of life.
"David is greatly respected and valued by his extension colleagues for his work and his interaction with county agents, farmers and agricultural professionals," said Brian Holmes, Interim Associate Dean of Extension and Outreach and Extension Program Co-Director. "His work has helped expand a strong dairy industry in the state."
Kammel's work includes developing, presenting and coordinating programs in dairy housing facilities and feeding systems including low cost milking centers, freestall barns, compost bedded barns, special needs and transition cow barns, and calf heifer housing. Much of this work has been with family dairy cow farms growing through the transition from 60-100 cows in a tie stall barn into newer milking parlor and freestall or bedded pen housing systems and calf and heifer housing systems.
Mark Mayer, UW-Extension Green County agriculture agent said of Kammel, "David's best attribute is his ability to take university research and apply it in practical ways farmers can both understand and utilize in their business. In addition to his ability for applying research to solve everyday problems, he has been innovative in developing new methods for handling problems on farms."
Holmes added, "David is an invaluable resource to his colleagues and dairy producers. Through his dedication, enthusiasm and integrity he has acquired a high level of trust from those who seek his expertise. This award recognizes his dedication, energy, and quality of service to the state."
