USDA announced this morning that approximately half of the nation's 23,000 herds had enrolled in the DMPP - the Dairy Margin Protection Program, authorized by the 2014 Farm Bill. Their perspective, found in their news release, can be read in full at: http://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USDAOC/bulletins/e8f15c

HOARD'S Dairyman provided the number of 46,960 total farms in Nation. Their report included some information from the Northeast as follows: In PA 30% of Pennsylvania herds (2,256 of over 7,000) bought into the MPP, with approximately 1100 in at $5.50 to $6.50 levels. In Vermont, over 70% of the herds (582 of 816) bought in, with 6% over the $4 level

4 Southeast States: Below is sign-up information from GA, KY, NC, and TN. Many thanks to the folks at a number of FSA offices who helped by providing sign-up numbers!

  • GA: 175 out of app. 240 herds (73%) enrolled; 90 out of 175 (51%) of participants at Buy-Up Levels
  • NC: 179 out of app. 250 herds (71%) enrolled; 90 out of 179 (50%) of participants at Buy-Up Levels
  • KY: 369 out of app. 792 herds (47%) enrolled; 221 out of 369 (60%) of participants at Buy-up Levels (Note, many Amish and Mennonite herds)
  • TN: 213 out of app. 390 herds (55%) enrolled; 86 herds out of 213 (41%) of participants at Buy-Up Level

The sign-up program for the 2016 year runs from July 1, 2015 through September 30, 2015.

The program sign-up was extended twice in the months of November and December 2014, providing an additional several weeks to allow for producers to gather information and enroll. Narrowing projections of margin levels in the weeks leading up to the deadline catalyzed many producers to go ahead and sign-up.

No information on total pounds has been announced, and it may not be available for quite some time. However, Jamie Jonker, NMPF, in a Facebook exchange, noted: "I would prognosticate the milk volume to be 66-75%."

*The 'number of herds in an area' used to make the %age calculations in the statements below should be considered an 'approximate' number. In any stated information piece, the 'number of herds often came from 2013 or 2014 data, so there would have been some herds exiting the business since that time. And, there were a few 'new' operations that came on board as well. Additional information about any facet of this program will be passed along in the coming days.
