Wisconsin Legislature Recognizes 2011 as World Veterinary Year

The Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association applauds the Wisconsin State Legislature for recognizing 2011 as World Veterinary Year. Both the Senate and Assembly approved joint resolutions honoring 2011as the 250th anniversary of the founding of the veterinary medical profession. Since the establishment of the world's first veterinary school in France in 1761, veterinarians have provided valuable public health services through preventive medicine while discovering the causes of numerous diseases that affect our nation's citizens. Veterinarians continue to advance human and animal health by inventing and refining techniques and instrumentations. They protect the global food supply and provide crucial assistance to the agricultural independence of developing nations around the world. The resolution states "the 2011 legislature appreciates the importance and value of veterinarians in Wisconsin as they remain dedicated to preserving the human-animal bond and promoting the highest standards of science-based, ethical animal welfare." The WVMA would like to thank Senator Shelia Harsdorf (R-River Falls) and Representative Dean Knudson (R-Hudson) for sponsoring the resolution. World Veterinary Year officially kicked of on January 24 in Versailles, France with an opening ceremony celebration. Events and celebrations have been planned year-long to promote veterinary medicine. For more information visit www.wvma.org 05.11.2011
