Select Sires adds 16 sires to daughter-proven lineups

Select Sires graduated 11 Holstein and five Jersey sires to the daughter-proven lineups following the April sire summary. “The April sire summary was accompanied by a base change, new genetic evaluation methods and several index formula updates,” said Jeff Ziegler, vice president of dairy cattle breeding, Select Sires Inc. “Even amid these changes, Select Sires’ lineups continued to deliver sires that create profitable genetic improvement. By working with the industry’s most esteemed breeders, we are able to develop sires that transmit elite components, health, daughter fertility and the conformation traits that create long-lasting, hardy cows.”

Holstein Highlights

Leading the graduating class with elite Herd Health Profit Dollars® (HHP$®) values is 14HO15932 CUMULUS (+909), 7HO15807 GEORGE MILLER (+810), 7HO15754 ZAPPA (+767) and 7HO15913 KAHN (+758). These sires transmit longevity and fitness traits without sacrificing components or daughter fertility.
Fertility forward sires include ZAPPA (+2.2 CCR, +1.5 FI), 7HO15753 ZYTHOS (+1.7 CCR, +1.0 FI) and 14HO15971 MOONWALKER (+2.6 HCR, +1.3 FI).
Seven of the 11 Holstein graduates earn the Mastitis ResistantPRO® designation. This designation combines Somatic Cell Score, CDCB Mastitis Resistance and Zoetis Mastitis Resistance to identify sires that will boost mastitis resistance in the next generation. 250HO16074 FIGARO is a standout sire for mastitis resistance with 106 Z MAST, +2.9 CDCB MAST and 2.87 SCS.
CUMULUS (+167 CFP), KAHN (+130), 7HO15597 RICHE (+115) and ZAPPA (+115) will add valuable components to the bulk tank.

FIGARO combines components (+0.13% Fat) with functional conformation traits (+1.43 UDC, +0.82 Strength) to improve udders while creating hardy, robust cows.
GEORGE MILLER creates healthy cows that will thrive for many lactations and breed back quickly, more important than ever with low heifer inventories (+810 HHP$, +3.8 CCR). Since his release as a young sire, proceeds from GEORGE MILLER semen sales have gone into a youth scholarship fund managed by the Holstein Foundation in honor of the late George Miller, former vice president of marketing at Select Sires Inc.
