Raleigh, N.C. [May 1, 2025] – North Carolina State University has named Asha Miles as the new director of Dairy Records Management Systems (DRMS), a trusted provider of dairy information and decision tools. Miles brings fresh leadership and extensive hands-on dairy industry knowledge to guide DRMS’s next chapter. She will begin her role on July 7.
As director, Miles will lead DRMS’ continued evolution as a nonprofit, university-connected partner to the dairy industry. In collaboration with Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) service affiliates, academic and industry partners, and dairy producers, she will help shape the future of DRMS’ products, partnerships and impact.
DRMS serves more than 8,000 herds across 48 states and Puerto Rico through trusted platforms like Dart, PocketDairy and the growing HerdHQ suite of web-based decision support tools. Under Miles’s leadership, DRMS will continue building tools that turn complex data into clear, actionable insights — while deepening support for producers, consultants and DHI field staff.
“Dr. Miles is an incredibly talented researcher with a deep understanding of the DRMS mission to provide information and decision-making tools to the dairy industry,” said Todd See, head of NC State’s Department of Animal Science. “I am confident that, through her experience and strong leadership capabilities, she will effectively guide DRMS into the future.”
“I’ve had the pleasure of working with Dr. Miles on several dairy industry task forces and have come to respect her ‘can do’ attitude, deep dairy industry knowledge, and her ability to communicate effectively with both dairy producers and scientists,” said Robert Fourdraine, assistant director for development at DRMS. “I look forward to working with her as we write the next chapter in DRMS’ 60-year history”
Miles brings a proven record of scientific leadership, stakeholder engagement and industry collaboration. Most recently, she served as a research geneticist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service, where she led nationally recognized projects in genomic evaluations, trait prediction and dairy sustainability — many of them involving DRMS data and partners.
In her position at USDA, she has served in leadership and advisory roles with the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB), National Dairy Herd Improvement Association (NDHIA), and the International Committee on Animal Recording (ICAR). She also chairs the CDCB Milking Speed Task Force and contributes to the National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB) Genetic Conditions Task Force, reflecting her broad network and respected voice within the dairy industry.
Miles holds a Ph.D. in animal science from Cornell University, and M.S. and B.S. degrees from UC Davis. Her research has been published in the Journal of Dairy Science, Frontiers in Genetics, Progressive Dairy and BMC Veterinary Research.
Miles joins DRMS at a time of opportunity — with new products on the horizon and growing demand for data dairy professionals can trust. As a nonprofit rooted in NC State and Iowa State, DRMS exists to serve the dairy industry with practical, research-backed tools. Miles will lead a team that understands agriculture, values and collaboration, and is dedicated to delivering insights that help producers make confident, data-informed decisions.
