For the past two years, special treatment has been paid to the cover of Hoard's Dairyman during June Dairy Month

by Amanda Smith, Associate Editor, Hoard's Dairyman

An updated rendition of the Foster Mother's of the Human Race painting by Bonnie Mohr (www.hoards.com/bookstore/FMP) graced the cover of the June 2010 issue of Hoard's Dairyman. Long time art director and 2012 National Dairy Shrine Pioneer honoree, Jim Baird, painted the original pieces.

For June 2011, a feeding scene with the Hoard's Dairyman Farm Guernseys was front and center. But, it wasn't just another cover. This one had the cows and tractor embossed so they jumped out from the page.

Which leads to the question, will Hoard's Dairyman keep up its fairly new tradition with the June 2012 cover?

To help celebrate June Dairy Month an image featuring two dairy princesses was taken by our art director, Ryan Ebert, at the Oregon Milk Carton Boat Races. To get the sheen that you'll see on your cover, a UV spot treatment was applied to the cover. It's a fast-drying, water-based, protective coating that makes the paper extremely glossy. The treatment is applied in-line on press. It is then cured with an ultraviolet light.

You many also notice that People Side appears again in this issue. To coordinate with the cover, Andrea Stolzfus worked on an article on how June Dairy Month is celebrated from coast to coast. The three events featured are the Oregon Milk Carton Boat Race in Portland, Ore.; Cows on the Concourse, Madison, Wis.; and Strolling of the Heifers, Brattleboro, Vt.

Racing their milk carton boat in our cover image, Bergen Rueck, Multnomah County Dairy Princess Ambassador (back), and Teri McGettigan, Columbia County Dairy Princess Ambassador (front), took part in the 2011 Dairy Farmers of Oregon Milk Carton Boat Race in Portland, Ore. The Dairy Farmers of Oregon combined forces with Portland Rose Festival and Portland Parks and Recreation in 2009 to revive the event which was a festival fixture from 1973 to 2002. The race, featuring handmade boats that float only by the means of recycled milk cartons and jugs, takes place during June Dairy Month.

We would like to thank Andrea Bloom and Jesse Baker for supplying images for Cows on the Concourse and Strolling of the Heifers, respectively.
