The story of the Foster Mothers paintings begins with a quote from the founder of Hoard's Dairyman.

"The cow is the foster mother of the human race. From the day of the ancient Hindoo to this time have the thoughts of men turned to this kindly and beneficent creature as one of the chief sustaining forces of human life." - W.D. Hoard

This quote penned more than a century ago was first brought to life by the brush strokes of James Baird, Hoard's Dairyman Art Director, in 1957. He recreated the image as the breed advanced, painting additional versions in 1963, 1991 and 1993. This 1993 version is the final one done by Baird. It features six of the breeds and is the first to show indication of the cows' udders.

Print measures 16.5 by 12 inches.
