Promoting good hoof health and preventing lameness on dairy farms requires a combination of management practices, on-farm protocols and facility design. A new, two-part webinar series presented by the Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW) in October and November. The two sessions will highlight a number of practices and provide insights for dairy producers to implement lameness management action plans on their own farms.
The World Class Webinar Series “Hooves are Made for Walking” series will include presentations by renowned hoof-health and animal welfare experts:
- The Fundamentals of Good Hoof Health, Wednesday, October 18. Karl Burgi, co-founder of Dairyland Hoof Care Institute and visiting lecturer at UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, will lead an in-depth discussion of the causes and prevention of lameness in dairy cattle.
- Simplifying Hoof Health from Day One, Wednesday, November 22. Dr. Nigel Cook, Department of Medical Sciences Chair and professor in Food Animal Production Medicine at UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, will outline a holistic approach to preventing lameness that targets different lesions at different periods in a cow’s life. Excellent transition management, better flooring and improved cow handling are strategies that can be implemented across all aspects of a dairy farm.
Both sessions will be presented live from noon to 1:00 p.m. CT. Participants who register can watch the sessions live or will receive a fully recorded version to watch at their leisure.
