From Field to Bunk: Growing and Feeding Dairy Quality Forages

The I-29 Moo University collaboration will be offering their Winter Workshop Series on Jan. 11 at the Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach office located at 400 Central Ave. Northwest in Orange City.

The workshop will focus on Field to Bunk: Growing and Feeding Dairy Quality Forages. All dairy producers, students, stakeholders and industry personnel are encouraged to attend.

Program agenda is as follows:

  • 9:30 a.m. - Registration Begins
  • 10:00 a.m. - New Forage Genetic Lines and How They Impact the Dairy Industry presented by Bruce Anderson, Extension Forage Specialist with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
  • Discover how forage genetic improvements in corn silage, sorghums and cover crops can influence the soil health and dairy diet performance in the operation.
  • 10:45 a.m. - Cover Crops: Incorporating Them into Your Forage Production System presented by Sara Berg, Extension Agronomy Field Specialist with South Dakota State University.
  • Learn about cover crop incorporation into fields, rotation considerations and planting methods.
  • 11:30 a.m. - Break
  • 11:45 a.m. - Incorporating Cover Crops into Dairy Rations presented by James C. Paulson.
  • Find out how to incorporate cover crops into dairy farms, while maximizing nutrition and profitability.
  • 12:30 p.m. - Lunch
  • 1:30 p.m. - Sponsor Recognition
  • 2:00 p.m. - Silage Pile Safety Training for You and Your Employees presented by Keith Bolsen, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus at Kansas State University.
  • Dr. Bolsen, known as “The Silage Man,” is a nationally known speaker on silage production and safety practices. Discover if your silage program is safe and ensure that everyone on the farm is safe.
  • 2:45 p.m. - Evaluating Dairy Diets from the Nutritionist to the Employee to the Cow co-presented by Fernando Diaz, DVM, Ph.D., Dairy Nutrition and Management Consultant with Rosecrans Dairy Consulting, and Tracey Erickson, Extension Dairy Specialist with South Dakota State University.
  • Understand feeding inefficiencies when diets are delivered to a dairy herd.

Registration is $50 per person and $25 per student due by Dec. 29. Late registration begins Dec. 30 and fees go up to $65 and $30, respectively. The Western Iowa Dairy Alliance (WIDA) will discount $50 off one registration per member farm. To register, visit
