Today's milk market is one of the toughest on record and dairy producers must monitor critical factors in production to keep milk production and quality up while keeping costs down, says Dave Ohman, DVM, Technical Service Specialist with Diamond V.

Dr. Ohman identified three areas of focus: udder health, forage quality, and cow comfort.

Dr Dave Ohman

“Comfortable cows produce more milk,” Dr. Ohman says. “They don’t have to use their nutrients for higher maintenance needs associated with stress and heat abatement.”

Diamond V’s Kevin Corizzo interviewed Dr. Ohman as part of the company’s monthly video series “Diamond V at 75: Immune Strength for Life,” which celebrates Diamond V’s history in the animal and feed industries and highlights its scientific research, technical expertise, and vision for the future. The September video serves as a preview for World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis., where Diamond V dairy experts will be on hand to meet producers next month.

The September video also features insight from Diamond V’s Devin Hanson, PhD, Ruminant Field Technical Specialist. Dr. Hanson says producers are using new research to help manage mastitis on the dairy.

Dr Devin Hanson

“In the last couple years," Dr. Hanson says, "producers have focused on optimizing cow comfort, elevating their milking procedures within the parlor, and removing bottlenecks that create stress on the farm. Any time they can alleviate stress, that’s ultimately going to leave an animal less susceptible for disease on farm.”

The "Diamond V at 75" video series is continuing throughout 2018 with on-site interviews with Diamond V experts at major industry events.
