Dairy farm herd manager Shelby Green of Coldsprings Farm in New Windsor, Maryland, participated in the Great American Milk Drive campaign kickoff on Saturday, April 13, at the Shoppers Food and Pharmacy, Clinton, Maryland.
American Dairy Association North East partners with local retailers, National Dairy Council™, Milk Processor Education Program (MilkPEP) and Feeding America® to support the Great American Milk Drive, to help get milk into the hands of families who need and want it. Shoppers are encouraged to make a cash donation to the campaign at the checkout line through May 15.
Even though fresh milk is one of the most requested food items, food banks are challenged to meet the demand because of milk’s perishability. Themed “Feed a Childhood,” the milk drive helps ensure kids in need receive the benefits of milk’s essential nutrients by providing access to it.
“Milk can help power the potential of kids – but only if they have access to it,” said Shelby Green. “Many people may not realize that hunger is a problem that impacts all sorts of families in urban, suburban and rural communities. As a dairy farmer, it’s great to know we can all have a part in getting milk to those in need.”
American Dairy Association North East also coordinated participation in the event with our National Football League partners. Former Washington Redskins player Brian Mitchell, advocate for the dairy industry, also joined in the kickoff.
More than $300,000 was raised through the Great American Milk Drive in the American Dairy Association North East territory in 2018. Nationally, more than 1.9 million gallons of milk – or more than 30 million servings – was delivered to food banks across the country since 2014.
