Handy Hint: October 10, 2011

Freezer is now mob feeder

We made a mob feeder for calves from a nonworking chest freezer. We drilled four holes on each side of the freezer and attached "peach teat" nipples, plastic tubing, and check valves. Inside the freezer are containers for milk. Currently, we use two 15-gallon barrels. The freezer is placed along the dividing panel of two pens, with 10 calves in each. Four nipples work well for 10 calves, so one freezer feeds 20 calves up to 8 weeks old. The freezers are insulated, easy to clean, and have a tight-hinged cover.
