Over sixty family farmers and rural advocates gathered in Madison March 4th for Wisconsin Farmers Union's Farm & Rural Lobby Day, where they advocated for policy priorities set by the grassroots membership at the organization’s recent state convention. Priority topics discussed with representatives were: local food and food security, rural development, soil health and conservation, access to affordable healthcare and farmer mental health, nutrition and ag education, and dairy policy.
“Farm & Rural Lobby Day is always an important opportunity for Farmers Union members to advocate for rural communities, but this year it’s especially critical,” said Darin Von Ruden, WFU President and dairy farmer from Westby. “With uncertainty at the federal level and Wisconsin in the midst of a state budget year, now is the time for farmers to come together and ensure that our voices are heard in shaping policies that will impact agriculture and rural economies for years to come.”
Governor Tony Evers delivered a special welcome at the event, emphasizing his plans to allocate over $80 million in his upcoming 2025-27 Executive Budget to support Wisconsin farmers, farm families, producers, processors, and the state’s agricultural industry.
“I’ve always thought of agriculture issues as nonpartisan,” remarked Evers. “They have to be.”
WI Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) Deputy Secretary Aileen Switzer also addressed the family farm organization, providing updates on DATCP initiatives and the work of the Wisconsin Farm Center, including their work on farmer mental health.
Representative Jodi Emerson spoke to attendees about an upcoming legislation proposal to support Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) and to encourage Wisconsinites to buy their produce locally.
WFU members will have the opportunity to lobby again this fall when hundreds of farmers from throughout the country will gather in Washington, D.C. for the National Farmers Union Fly-In in September. Scholarships will be available for first-time attendees. Members will also carry policy forward at the National Farmers Union Convention March 9-11 in Oklahoma City, OK.
