Hoard's Dairyman Guernseys Take Home Both High Fat and Protein Average Awards

The 2012 awards for the high overall herd average for butterfat and protein goes to one of the largest Guernsey herds in the entire country, Hoard's Dairyman Farm of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. Hoards also has the distinction of winning the Commercial Herd Award, recognizing the top large herd in the nation for Energy Corrected Milk. Hoard's Dairyman Completed 140 records with an average of 22,642M 4.7% 1,067F 3.4% 770P for an energy corrected total of 25,409M.

The Hoard's Dairyman Farm is owned by the Knox family and the herd is managed by Jason Yurs, the 2008 recipient of the National Outstanding Young Guernsey Farmer Award. The farm hosts various tours, seminars, and other events to increase exposure of the Guernsey breed in addition to the exposure the breed receives from the Hoard's Dairyman magazine, one of the largest dairy publications in the world.

Hoard's credits its current production level, and the steady climb the herd has experienced since its expansion in 2006 when they transitioned to three-time-a-day milking, to the emphasis they have placed on calving heifers at an early age.

Aside from the accolades listed above, in the past year the heard has had 40 cows placed on the Component Queen list that recognizes the top 100 combines fat and protein records in the nationl; they were ranked 18th in the national for the average CPI index of the herd; and they have 3 different cows among the top ten living-lifetime cows in the nation for milk, fat and protein.

The American Guernsey association is based in Columbus, Ohio, and is dedicated to the advancement and promotion of Guernsey dairy cows. The association claims over 700 active members nationwide.
