Ribeiro boys at World Ag Expo

I think I walked right out of the bottom of my shoes last week! There used to be a time when my feet didn’t hurt so bad and my legs wouldn’t lockup when I walked, but I can’t remember exactly when that was!

Well, I guess that is what I get for walking around World Ag Expo for the last two

weeks. Oh yeah, I said two weeks. You see, for decades now, the World Ag Expo has been run in part by volunteers from the community who believe that agriculture is paramount to our future. And believe me, the exhibitors at this show believe it whole heartedly!

The expo this year showcased a lot of technologies for dairies that could have great opportunities. Technology is rapidly advancing, and each time a new product is created it just compounds and compounds, creating newer and greater things. I feel like I have a pretty good handle on technological advancements and keep an open mind as new ideas are coming around, but even I feel as if the new technologies are moving too fast!

During the weeks leading up to the farm show, I get the opportunity to build relationships with some of the exhibitors who are more than willing to share with me all about their products. I traveled some serious miles in these old boots, finding new companies and learning about new ways of doing things.

Am I the only one who is hesitant to try new things? Especially when things are going well? It's the old adage "don't fix what ain't broke,” but what if you don't know if it's broken? What if you think you are doing good, but you could be better if you adopted a different product, technology, or management practice on your farm?

It's an interesting struggle to say the least. Times are changing, and if I have learned anything, the only constant is that nothing stays the same. I would encourage everyone to not get stuck in the “same old, same old” mentality. Instead, keep an open mind to the new things that are out there. Please don't get me wrong  not every practice, technology, or feed additive is for everyone. But maybe, just maybe, there might be that one thing that has an impact on your farm.

Our family had a wonderful time at the World Ag Expo in Tulare. It was great to see so many familiar faces at the show this year!
