CAYUGA MILK INGREDIENTS ANNOUNCED the grand opening of a $270 million expansion project in Aurelius, N.Y. The processor of 1.5 billion pounds of milk from 22 dairies in the region installed an ultra-high temperature (UHT) packaging system, new machinery, equipment, and wastewater treatment plant.

At full capacity, the plant is expected to process 1.8 million pounds of milk per day and will produce ultrafiltered, lactose-free, shelf-stable milk.

DEVELOPMENT OF POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS related to the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Commission report spurred a letter signed by more than 250 dairy, food, and farm organizations. The letter, addressed to the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, the Health and Human Services secretary, and the Environmental Protection Agency administrator, noted that the report “lacked transparency and any opportunity for public engagement.”

CHINA’S EFFORTS TO BOOST THE BIRTHRATE could bolster dairy export growth. China has introduced new subsidy payments reaching up to 10,000 yuan ($1,391) annually per child in some regions of the country. The push to increase population could grow milk powder imports, as parents favor imported infant formula.

MAY MILK PRODUCTION ROSE 1.6% year-over-year largely due to 90,000 additional dairy cows being added to the U.S. dairy herd since January 2025. Both April and May experienced the highest milk growth since July 2021, shared CoBank’s Corey Geiger. May 2025 also marked the largest national dairy herd in four years.

THE U.S. CONTINUES TO SEE GROWTH IN COMPONENTS, primarily butterfat and protein. “That growth has doubled and even tripled gains in milk output on a percentage basis over the past 12 months,” said Geiger. The graph below shows a detailed comparison.
