The official December genetic proofs are now available.
In the Holstein breed, STgen Cowen Thorson-ET again retained the top spot in the genomic Net Merit (NM$), Cheese Merit (CM$), and Total Performance Index (TPI) lists. He has now held those positions for three consecutive proof runs. On the proven side, Mr T-Spruce Frazz Lionel remained the high NM$ and CM$ bull, positions he has also held since this April.
However, Lionel moved down to fourth for TPI as former high genomic bull Genosource Captain and his clones Genosource Jack and Genosource John reached the top of that list at 3214 TPI.
There was also little change among the Jersey sires. Vierra Theboss {6}-ET remained the top genomic bull for CM$, and River Valley Chief held that title on the proven side. Both the genomic and proven Jersey Performance Index (JPI) lists saw last proof’s second-place bulls move into the top spot. That was Four J Monster {6}-P-ET among genomic sires and CDF JLS Pilgrim Thrasher for proven bulls.
Minor corrections to the calculations of Feed Saved and the non-Holstein type traditional evaluation were the only adjustments made this month by the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB), which fully replaced the previous online system with a new data portal with these evaluations.
By the numbers
A.I. organizations reported 6,209 bulls active in December. Of these, 4,248 were genomic young bulls, giving genomic sires a 68% market share. This is on par with the 69% they held in the August 2022 evaluations. Holstein sires numbered 5,050 in all, and 857 Jersey bulls were included, meaning the two breeds made up 95% of all bulls reported.
