A rainy Saturday didn't stop Holstein enthusiasts from around the world from watching as Bonaccueil Maya Goldwyn was named Senior and Grand Champion of the World Dairy Expo International Holstein Show. Judge Justin Burdette from Mercersburg, Penn., and his Associate Gus Schwartzbeck, Union Bridge, Md., selected the aged cow as the best of the Holstein cows that walked the purple shavings.
Judge Burdette called Maya a cow with great dairy strength, a tremendous udder, and overall style and balance. She was also named the Champion Bred and Owned cow. Maya was exhibited by Ty-D Holsteins, Drolet and Sons, Ferme Jacobs and A. and R. Boulet of Cap-Sante, Quebec.
Four-year-old Cookview Goldwyn Monique from Chebanse, Ill., shown by Jeff Butler and Joe and Amber Price, was named Reserve Senior and Grand Champion. Honorable Mention went to Robrook Goldwyn Cameron, a four-year-old exhibited by Budjon Farms, St. Jacobs ABC, Peter and Lyn Vail and Woodmansee Farms of Lomira, Wis.
A pair of silky black senior 3-year-olds were named Intermediate Champion and Reserve. Top honors went to Butz-Butler Gold Barbara-ET, exhibited by Dr. Matt Iager, Ernest Kueffner, River Valley Dairy and St. Jacobs of Boonsboro, Md. BKB Goldwyn Amenda, owned by Westcoast Holsteins, Chilliwack, British Columbia, was Reserve Champion.
In the Junior Show, Cameron Ridge Atwood Beauty was tapped as Junior Champion out of the 196 heifers shown. The spring yearling is owned by Gene Iager and Chris and Jennifer Hill from Thurmont, Md. Reserve Champion was fall yearling class winner Fanico Reginald Marty, owned by Co-Vale, A. Eaton, S. Morrill, Conroy, Pasada and Garcia of Preble, New York.
In the 2013 World Dairy Expo International Holstein Futurity, Milksource Dundee Lovin, exhibited by Ferme Blondin and TJR Genetics of Saint-Placide, Quebec, was the winning cow.
Ferme Jacobs won the Premier Breeder honor again this year, and Milksource Genetics earned the Premier Exhibitor award. The winning state herd is from Quebec, followed by Wisconsin and Maryland.
With an undeniable presence in the winner's circle and in every class, Braedale Goldwyn was named Premier Sire at the 2013 International Holstein Open Show for the sixth consecutive year.
