Aside from having top tier dairy programs, what do the University of Wisconsin- Madison, Iowa State, Cornell, Virginia Tech, Kansas State and the University of Minnesota have in common? Over the past 26 years, each of these universities has had students spend a summer in Fort Atkinson, Wis., serving as the Hoard's Dairyman Editorial Intern.
Internships provide students with an opportunity to explore a career field. For a three-month period, students immerse themselves in a specific sector of the industry. During this time, they "try on" a potential career and discover if that line of work is the right fit for them.
This past summer we had the pleasure of integrating Maggie Seiler's talents into our editorial mix. Seiler, a Valley Center, Kan., native, is now a senior at Kansas State, double majoring in agricultural communications along with animal sciences and industry.
Shortly before her time in Wisconsin came to a close, Seiler shared her thoughts on the internship, the responsibilities that come with the internship, and what it was like to cover the dairy industry in 18 states:

The author, Amanda Smith, was an associate editor and an animal science graduate of Cornell University. Smith covers feeding, milk quality and heads up the World Dairy Expo Supplement. She grew up on a Medina, N.Y., dairy, and interned at a 1,700-cow western New York dairy, a large New York calf and heifer farm, and studied in New Zealand for one semester.
