The National Holstein Convention Panel in Dubuque, Iowa (L to R): Brent Schuler, Diesel Hitt, John Meyer, Jeff Brantmeier, Dan Bolin and Ashley Abbott.
"Have a vision for what you want in life."
That is what Ashley Abbott, a New York dairy producer and farm wife, told those attending this year's National Holstein Convention in Dubuque, Iowa, when asked by Holstein's John Meyer for their keys to success.
"Partner with someone who is successful," stated Diesel Hitt, a fellow New York dairy producer who didn't have a dairy background but now is part-owner and operator of a 600-cow dairy in Adams Center, N.Y.
"Remember, you have to work at it. Success just doesn't happen overnight," said Jeff Brantmeier of Sherwood, Wis., whose family maintains a 31,000-plus herd average at their Hilrose Dairy.
Dan Bolin of Clarksville, Iowa, added, "Get out and ask questions, learn and get involved."
As for why they decided to dairy farm in the first place, Brent Schuler of Fleetwood, Pa., said, "By running a dairy, you can be instantly rewarded for your work."
"The family aspect brought me back to the farm. The opportunity to work with our children everyday was just too much to pass up," said Bolin.
