With dairy farms in seven of its eight regions netting over $1,000 per head last year, clients for Frazer Certified Public Accountants and Consultants reported a very profitable year in 2014.

At a $1,337 profit, Idaho topped the western region while New Mexico's $745 per head return was the lowest. On a per hundredweight basis (cwt.), returns ranged from $4.10 to $5.83.

Here are the regions ranked from top to bottom on a per head basis, with cwt. also listed:
  • Idaho, $1,378 per head, $5.59 cwt.
  • Arizona, $1,261, $5.76
  • Texas Panhandle, $1,252, $5.83
  • Southern California, $1,202, $5.24
  • San Joaquin Valley of California, $1,166, $4.98
  • Kern County, California, $1,115, $5.09
  • Pacific Northwest (Oregon and Washington), $999, $4.53
  • New Mexico, $744, $4.10
Throughout 2014, feed costs dropped which helped lead to the record year in producer margins for these Western regions, noted Frazer LLP.

As for milk per cow, Idaho and the San Joaquin Valley averaged 76.4 and 76.1 pounds of milk per cow, respectively. New Mexico was on the low end at 65.9 pounds.
