Hundreds of high school youth test their dairy judging skills.

FFA members judging the Holstein heifer class

Over 380 FFA members participated in the FFA Dairy Cattle Judging Contest held at World Dairy Expo on Tuesday morning. The contest was organized by the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. During the contest, students judge four classes. In lieu of oral reasons, students answer questions on one class. Possible questions include things like which cow had the best udder and which cow was the softest in her pasterns, etc.

In a one-point margin of victory, New Richmond FFA won the contest topping a field of 122 teams. The team, which hails from northwest Wisconsin included Austin Raymond (sixth individual), Rachel Skinner, and Tyler Vandyk. Second place went to Denmark FFA, followed by Pulaski FFA. Both teams also call Wisconsin home. The high individual, Sam Reynolds, anchored the fourth-place team from nearby Oregon FFA. The other top teams included Westby FFA, Belmont, Antigo, Iowa-Grant, and Elkhart Lake.

Rounding out the top five individuals were Tylar Heine, Jefferson FFA; Maddy Gwidt, Pulaski FFA; Victoria Leiterman, Denmark FFA; and Nathan Daniels, Iowa-Grant FFA. Just seven points separated the top five individuals.
