The positive influence Dairy Quiz Bowl has on youth development is immeasurable.

I recently had the opportunity to volunteer at the 2025 National Holstein Convention as an official with the Youth Dairy Quiz Bowl contest. The competitors were quite impressive, and it brought back a flood of fond memories from when I was once a participant.

My reentry into the experience all started with a text message from Kelli Dunklee at Holstein USA. Yes, the same Kelli that was in charge of quiz bowl at Holstein Convention back when I competed! Kelli just celebrated 31 years at Holstein USA. She has made such an impact on so many dairy youths!

On the first day of competition, I sat next to another volunteer only to realize she and I competed against each other back in the day at multiple National Holstein Conventions. Now we are both mothers to little ones that may soon be future participants. I love how it comes full circle.

Competing in Dairy Quiz Bowl not only educates youth on various topics in the dairy industry, but it also teaches skills and intangibles that are foundational in social and professional settings. As the competitors took their seats in their coordinating business attire, they were poised and articulate in their introductions of themselves and their coaches.

The tremendous amount of time these youth spent studying and practicing was evident as they answered tough questions individually in the first round. In the second round the buzzers were busy as they intently listened to as many descriptors as needed to quickly respond before their opponents. Simultaneously they kept track of who on their team had correctly answered, vying for bonus questions by working together. All the while they remained conscious of the score, and when points were close, they only buzzed when they were confident in their answers as incorrect responses to toss-ups result in deductions.

The strategy and knowledge these youth possessed was a testament to the amount of time and effort their coaches had poured into them in preparation. Study sessions, road trips, flights . . . it is a big commitment to be on a quiz bowl team and even more to coach one!

After a long day of intense competition, the winners emerged as finalists for the next day’s championship. As each team exited, they gave us officials firm handshakes and shared words of gratitude. From elementary schoolers to college students, no matter the age these youth were exceptional.

When I reflect on my own time competing in Dairy Quiz Bowl, the efforts we put in pale in comparison to the fun memories and important lessons that stay with me to this day. The positive influence Dairy Quiz Bowl has on youth development is immeasurable. It was an honor to volunteer and support such an impactful experience last month. I know that these impressive youth will be our future leaders, and I am excited to witness their continued success.
