January was a tough month in our house. There were snow days, extreme cold, respiratory viruses, and stomach bugs on top of work travel, sports, and everything in between. It was certainly a challenge! February is upon us, and I’m excited for a fresh start.

When I think of February, I think of the Super Bowl and Valentine’s Day. I once heard a statistic about the consumption of cheese being largest on Super Bowl Sunday. I have not fact checked that information, but it seems plausible. On that note, let’s talk dairy and love.

What do I love about dairy products?

  1. Milk fat: We raise our children on whole milk. What’s to drink in our house? Milk or water. The milk fat found in dairy supports brain development — crucial for the little ones!

  2. Meal replacement: Speaking of my children, some of them are selective eaters. What they loved yesterday they won’t even try today. It can be frustrating, but I know I can always count on dairy as a well-rounded meal replacement that they will eat (aka, my dinner backup plan). The macro- and micronutrients in milk, yogurt, and cheese are awesome.

  3. Protein: I am so impressed by the significant improvements whey and milk protein products have made in recent years. Gone are the days of choking down chalky, chunky protein shakes. If your protein shake isn’t pleasantly smooth and absolutely delicious, you are missing out!

  4. Sweet treats: Sweets are my weakness. I love a good treat after dinner. Yogurt can satisfy this craving without the guilt.

  5. Chocolate. Dark chocolate has its place, but I tend to prefer creamy, milk chocolate.

  6. Savory snacks: Sometimes I do want a salty snack. Cottage cheese and Everything but the Bagel seasoning is a go-to!

  7. All-out indulgence: Whether it’s a cone, a sundae, or a novelty, I love all ice cream products.

  8. Cheese: Is there anything not made better by cheese? Hard, soft, stinky, or fried — it’s delicious in every way! (On that note, my kids call string cheese “snake cheese.” It’s part of their dinner backup plan.)

  9. Butter: Whether spread, sautéed, or baked, put it on and in everything!

  10. Convenience and affordability: Most dairy products can be found in easy, portable packaging. They are also the best bang for your buck: the nutrients per dollar spent cannot be beat!

As I wrote this list, I realized that it could be much longer. There could be a dedicated list per type of dairy product and it still would be extensive. Dairy is versatile as a standalone product or ingredient. It is naturally nutritious, delicious, and affordable. There’s so much to love about dairy.
