For those who market the products we produce on our dairy farms to global consumers, any region that is importing or buying two-thirds of its dairy products should grab their attention. That is the case throughout the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN). Think Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Cambodia and Laos.

"If you look at what is going on in this region, it is very exciting," said Tony Emms, who heads up the U.S. Dairy Export Council's (USDEC) Southeast Asian office.

"Having a base here is very important. When Leprino established a base here, cheese sales began growing," said Emms, noting that the Colorado-based company established an office in Singapore to not only sell product but, more importantly, service the needs of Asian customers.

The excitement for U.S. dairy products spilled over into one of the largest food shows in Vietnam. In the video, Angélique Hollister, who heads up cheese and consumer products for USDEC, recaps the first day at the Vietnam Food and Hotel Trade Show.

During the open day of the show, USDEC and its U.S. trade show partners took orders for at least three shipping containers of U.S. cheese. Each container holds 18 tons or just shy of 40,000 pounds of cheese.
