Create materials that help you land an internship or job.

Writing a résumé was one of the most challenging projects I worked on during my college and high school career. However, it was probably the most important. A résumé is more than a piece of paper. It tells people who you are without a face-to-face interaction. Here are some of my tips for shaping your résumé and getting your dream internship!

1. Make a document for all activities, work experiences, and skills to date. Having a specific and up-to-date résumé will make it easier when deadlines approach. I have a document with all my accomplishments and jobs, so I can pull information from this page to make a specific résumé for each position I apply to.

2. Write an objective. At the top of the résumé, add what your goal is and why you are submitting an application. For example, Objective: To obtain the Hoard’s Dairyman Summer Editorial Internship.

3. Add a skills section. My résumé in high school did not have this section at the bottom, but in college I wanted to highlight my skills. A skills section tells the employer where you are most proficient. In addition, it explains what areas most interest you such as calf care or animal husbandry. A few of the skills listed on my resume are social media, communication, and attention to detail.

4. Print out and review. Have a friend review your résumé and check for spelling errors. Read your resume out loud to catch any errors.
