Applications are now available for the Hoard’s Dairyman editorial internship for the summer of 2019.

Our 2018 editorial intern, Christy Achen, interviewed a dairy producer during a farm visit.

The most valuable internships leave college students with job experience, mentorship, and life lessons by the end of the summer. With our Hoard’s Dairyman editorial internship, we strive to do that and hopefully more for a student interested in agricultural journalism.

Upon the completion of her summer with us, a past intern remarked, “I was surprised how much responsibility you gave me during this internship.” It’s true — we expect a lot from our intern. They are absolutely part of our editorial team, writing for both our print and electronic offerings. There are several projects our intern is in charge of each summer, plus we encourage them to pitch their own ideas for stories, too.

Our intern also represents our publication at dairy meetings, breed conventions, and on farm visits. That means the intern occasionally hits the road and the sky, traveling to various parts of the country.

The desk for our intern sits right in our editorial office, so they are part of the day-to-day action and interactions between our entire staff. One editor is the main supervisor for the internship position, but all of our editors offer editorial advice and mentorship throughout the summer.

Those three months seem to fly by, and before we know it, our intern is packing up and heading back to school. We always miss the contributions they made to the magazine and their presence in the office. It is our hope, though, that we gave them a great experience and well-rounded taste of agricultural journalism.

Don’t just take it from us. Take a look at what our 2018 intern, Christy Achen, said she gained from her summer in the blog “Five things I learned as a Hoard’s Dairyman editorial intern.”

The search is on for our 31st intern, and the due date for our internship application is just over a month away. We encourage any students with a passion for writing and dairy to apply by October 17, 2018. Students should mail a cover letter, resume, grade transcript, and three written letters of recommendation from references to Abby Bauer, Associate Editor, 28 Milwaukee Ave. West, Fort Atkinson, WI 53538.
