Americans are saying, "Pass the cheese, please" more than ever before.
In data just released by USDA's Economic Research Service, cheese consumption nearly pushed past 34 pounds per person. At 33.9 pounds, cheese sales are now double those just a generation ago in 1978.
Both major cheese categories tracked by USDA grew last year.
American cheese sales, headed by Cheddar, rose from 13.3 to 13.5 pounds per capita.
In the "other cheese" category, sales grew from 20.1 to 20.4. The leader of that parade is Mozzarella, which has been the growth leader for decades as it's the main dairy ingredient on pizza.
