What would you do with an extra 10 pounds of milk per cow per day?

Jude CapperNo doubt, any additional money in the milk check could be put to good use on the herd or around the farm . . . but the benefits go beyond your barnyard. In her presentation at the Dairy Business Association's Dairy Strong Conference held in Madison, Wis., Jude Capper shared what 10 pounds of milk could do for some very special consumers.

She explained that, over a year's time, an extra 10 pounds per day from a single cow could provide enough milk for 31 students to have a carton of milk with lunch each day for the whole school year. With one in eight children around the world facing food insecurity and hunger, those 10 extra pounds can certainly make a difference.

Facts like this one are living proof we can share with consumers. If our customers allow us to continue making improvements to dairy farming that enhance productivity and efficiency, good things can happen, and we can all work toward a common goal of supplying nutritious food to people around the world.

Capper, who was on the faculty at Washington State University before becoming an independent livestock sustainability consultant, is passionate about the dairy industry, sustainability and communicating with consumers. She encouraged producers to help spread dairy's story while connecting with the public in ways they can appreciate.

"The best conversation we can have with anyone about our industry is when they understand we have shared values," she said. "We must have those shared values to start the conversation."
