There are two great higher-learning opportunities via webinars taking place today, Monday, April 9 at noon Central Standard Time.

There’s a new calf killer in town will be presented by a three-person veterinary team. Donald Sockett, Rachel Klos, and Jason Lombard will discuss what dairy producers and calf growers should know about the Salmonella Heidelberg outbreak in humans and cattle. During the discussion, the three specialists will delve into management practices associated with its introduction and eventual spread in a herd.

Sponsored by the Land O’Lakes Animal Milk Products Company, this Hoard’s Dairyman webinar can be accessed by clicking on this link: There’s a new calf killer in town. Hoard’s Dairyman has been hosting these monthly webinars since 2011.

Significant changes to the Margin Protection Program also will air live on Monday, April 9 at noon Central Standard Time. During this event, the University of Wisconsin’s Mark Stephenson and Cornell University’s Andrew Novakovic will detail new provisions for the 2018 dairy insurance program known as MPP-Dairy or the Margin Protection Program for Dairy provided by USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA).

In their presentation, Stephenson and Novakovic will walk through updates signed into law by the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018. This includes monthly coverage, lower coverage costs on the first 5 million pounds of milk, and reopening of the 2018 sign-up. Given that February’s margins slipped to a 20-month low of $6.88, producers could still get that milk covered since rules are yet to be finalized.

Both webinars will take place today at noon Central Standard Time; fortunately, both presentations will also be archived, so you can check them out at a later date if you can’t view them live.
